CEADs Update: The First Academician and Expert Forum on Promoting High-Quality Development in Xinjiang through Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality

Dual-Carbon Academician Forum

The Xinjiang Academician Forum on the "Core Area of the Silk Road Economic Belt: Industrial Revitalization, Innovation and Development" is driven by efforts to advance construction of the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt and to fully leverage the leading role of scientific and technological innovation. The forum will be held in Urumqi on July 18. It is hosted by the Urumqi Municipal People's Government and the Development and Reform Commission of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, organized by Guangdong Trade Services, and co-organized by the Urumqi Development and Reform Commission and Huahao Culture Technology (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. The forum consists of three sections: a main forum, a series of roundtable meetings, and a dual-carbon sub-forum.

The dual-carbon sub-forum, titled "Academician and Expert Forum on Promoting High-Quality Development in Xinjiang through Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality", focuses on Xinjiang's pathways to carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, technological innovation, and opportunities in climate investment and finance. Several academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering have been invited to offer recommendations for Xinjiang's industrial development. Participants are welcome to join online at 15:30 Beijing time on the afternoon of July 18.

The dual-carbon forum has received strong support from the Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Administrative Centre for China's Agenda 21 under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the governments of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Urumqi. It is hosted by the China Resources Environmental Protection Application Technology Research Institute, the Beijing Green Exchange, and the Climate Investment and Finance Committee of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, organized by Guangdong Trade Services, and co-organized by Huahao Culture Technology (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. CEADs team members Dabo Guan and Xi Liang participated in the organization and coordination of the forum.

According to an assessment by the China Emission Accounts and Datasets (CEADs) team, the dual-carbon sub-forum is expected to generate 21.85 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions, including 18.39 tonnes from intercity transport, 1.1 tonnes from hotels, 0.57 tonnes from the venue, 0.56 tonnes from dining, and 0.20 tonnes from local transport. The organizers will plant 220 new trees in China Resources Haiyuan Hope Town to offset the carbon emissions generated by the seminar. Because the above accounting may involve deviations and incomplete statistics, the sub-forum may not necessarily achieve carbon neutrality.
