CEADs Team Releases the Emerging Economies CO2 Emissions Report 2024

Climate change is one of the major global challenges facing humanity. China has set the goal of striving to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Under the new landscape of global climate governance, focusing on emerging economies, especially low- and middle-income countries and small island states such as Myanmar, Ethiopia, and Grenada, as well as their carbon emissions and progress toward carbon neutrality, has become an important basis for understanding future global carbon emission trends, strengthening international climate cooperation, and enhancing the voice of emerging economies in addressing climate change.

Report Content

This report provides an in-depth discussion of energy consumption and carbon emission dynamics in emerging economies across Asia, Africa, Latin America, Oceania, and other regions. It presents comprehensive information on primary energy consumption structures, characteristics of fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions, and the contributions of different sectors to fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions. The number of countries covered has been expanded to 70, and the time series has been updated to 2021, revealing the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of energy consumption in emerging economies and its impact on global carbon emissions.

Report Overview

As an important reference for energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in emerging economies, the Emerging Economies CO2 Emissions Report provides strong data support and guidance for low-carbon transitions in relevant countries. Compared with previous editions, this year report makes important expansions for low- and middle-income countries in Africa and for small island states. It characterizes carbon dioxide emission features and development trends, deepens the analysis of regional heterogeneity, and offers a panoramic perspective for improving the international community understanding of the carbon reduction potential and challenges of emerging economies.

The report shows that fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions in emerging economies have grown significantly. After the pandemic, fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions rebounded in some countries, including Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco, and Uganda. Compared with 2020, fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions in Brazil, Bolivia, Egypt, and Morocco increased by 13.3%, 17.1%, 8.5%, and 8.7%, respectively, in 2021. Meanwhile, countries such as Armenia, Burundi, Ghana, Mauritania, Togo, and Turkey continued to see rising fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions. Compared with 2020, fossil-fuel-related carbon emissions in Armenia, Togo, Mauritania, and Turkey increased further by 8.6%, 25%, 6.5%, and 9.7%, respectively, in 2021. Armenia and Mauritania have experienced rapid industrial development in recent years. Carbon emissions from fossil energy consumed in power generation increased from 1.2 million tonnes and 0.3 million tonnes in 2010 to 1.9 million tonnes and 1.2 million tonnes in 2021, respectively.

The CEADs team will continue to expand and optimize data for emerging economies, update the time coverage of emission inventories, and continuously improve data accuracy and robustness, contributing actively to the global response to climate change.
