AESS2018 Tsinghua University Day 3: Learning Through Fun, with Modest Results

Applied Energy Summer School 2018 Tsinghua University

Day 3

Learning through Fun, with Modest Success

After the ice-breaking session and guidance from the instructors, the academic atmosphere of the summer camp became increasingly intense. On the third day, the participants gathered early in the Tsinghua Garden conference room to discuss special topics related to water resources and carbon emissions, working in close coordination.

Seeing everyone fully engaged and immersed in their research, Instructor Guan Dabo organized each research group to briefly present its takeaways and questions so that everyone could exchange ideas and learn from one another. Some groups received praise from Instructor Guan and recognition from everyone, setting an example for the rest.

Progress Reports Underway

Near noon, Dr. Tian Jing looked back on her research journey and shared her thoughts and insights from carbon emission research.

Lecture

In the afternoon, Professor Chen Bin of Beijing Normal University, a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and a participant in the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Program, gave a talk on "Urban water resource management in a metabolism-nexus perspective". Using the water shortage challenges facing urban ecosystems in China as the research background, he systematically analyzed urban water resource management mechanisms. Professor Chen explained in detail the process of urban water metabolism and pointed out that urban water resources, energy consumption, and carbon emissions are interconnected and mutually influential. Using network analysis methods, he examined the water-energy coupling and carbon-water coupling mechanisms, thereby improving water-use efficiency and offering valuable insights for urban water resource management in China. Everyone was captivated by Professor Chen's excellent lecture and eagerly asked him questions.

After enjoying this academic feast, everyone returned to their own research topics. After drawing on the experience of other groups, each team had a clearer division of labor, closer collaboration, and greatly improved efficiency, remaining fully immersed in their work. It was not until after 6 p.m., when Dr. Shan Yuli announced that the activities for the day were over, that everyone left reluctantly.
