AESS2018 Tsinghua University Day 2: Guidance from Leading Scholars, Deeply Rewarding
Applied Energy Summer School 2018 Tsinghua University

Day 2
Guidance from Leading Scholars, Deeply Rewarding
After the opening ceremony, ice-breaking games, themed lectures, and welcome dinner on the first day, the participants gradually became familiar with one another amid laughter and conversation. On the 24th, they gathered at the meeting room in Tsinghua with great anticipation, looking forward to an enjoyable and fulfilling second day. In the morning, two special guests appeared. The warm and approachable Professor Guan Dabo introduced two leading researchers: Professor Tao Shu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and environmental geographer from the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University; and Professor Wu Libo, a Young Changjiang Scholar and environmental economist from the School of Economics at Fudan University. The two distinguished scholars delivered excellent and inspiring talks.

First, Academician Tao Shu gave a talk titled "Trend of air pollution in China-PKU emission inventory based simulation". Starting with the health impacts of air pollution on humans and livestock, he explained the effects of residential emissions on health. Drawing on four examples, including the influence of residential sources on living standards, research on the regional contribution of traditional coke ovens, separating the effects of meteorological conditions on PM2.5, and the impact of urbanization on urban and rural emissions, the talk was highly engaging and broadened the thinking and research paths of the young participants.

Afterward, Professor Wu Libo gave a talk titled "Carbon emissions trading system development in China: Advancing the experiment to reality", sharing the theory and practice of China carbon market. By combining carbon market theory with policy research, she discussed how setting the total volume and intensity of emissions permits can influence future policy.

Let me ask Professor Wu one more question
Finally, Dr. Zhang Zongyong gave a detailed introduction to key knowledge and points in water accounting through the talk "The city level water use accounts in China: methodology and applications".

Hands-on Practice
In the afternoon, based on the different research directions of each group, the participants discussed and identified research themes such as carbon emissions and water resources, then divided tasks and collaborated across groups. Soon, everyone was actively engaged in academic exchange and close teamwork. Before they knew it, time had passed quickly and it was already 6 p.m. With a sense that there was still more to explore, everyone closed their laptops, and the second day of AESS came to a successful end.

Keep going, everyone!
