AEss 2019 Day 9: All Set and Ready to Go

The Applied Energy-CEADs Summer School was drawing to a close, but the wide range of activities was still in full swing. The packed schedule on Day 9 seemed to show just how reluctant everyone was to say goodbye.

Master Lectures

1

Professor Zhaohua Wang from Beijing Institute of Technology is a Distinguished Professor under the Chang Jiang Scholars Program and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Professor Wang delivered a lecture titled "Data-Driven Mechanisms of Residents' Low-Carbon Consumption Behavior." He highlighted the energy and emissions issues arising from household consumption, explored changes in residents' behavior and their impacts from a big-data perspective, and brought students cutting-edge analytical insights. After the lecture, Dongying Sun from Jiangsu University, Yuying Wang from China University of Geosciences, and Ya Zhou from Guangdong University of Technology discussed related issues based on their own reflections.

2

Professor Can Wang from the School of Environment at Tsinghua University has participated many times in global climate-change negotiations as a member of the Chinese delegation, speaking on behalf of China. In his lecture on "Global Climate Change Negotiations," Professor Wang introduced the history and process of the international community's response to climate change, discussed the similarities and differences among the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement, and emphasized bottom-up planning approaches and economically incentivized climate policies. Drawing on his rich negotiation experience, Professor Wang gave participants a comprehensive view of the climate negotiation process and deepened their understanding of national discourse power in climate change issues, leaving students with a fresh perspective.

Work and Play

With the perceived temperature climbing above 40 degrees Celsius, students were feeling drowsy, and a new round of the "water gun battle" broke out as soon as the call went out. The thrilling water fight from two days earlier still seemed vivid: some chased, some ran, some dodged, and some escaped. In Water Gun Battle 2.0, students used the most effective attack weapons, the fastest dodging methods, and quick-drying outfits. Their combat power was upgraded, and everyone was ready to settle old scores. As a new player in this round, seasoned veteran Teacher Dabo Guan inevitably became the first target and was warmly "taken care of" by all the students right from the start. Those who had not had time to enjoy the water-splashing fun last time also cooled off thoroughly under the blazing sun this time. How did the friends soaking in buckets feel about the experience? Since the scene was so lively, let us feel the joyful atmosphere through the screen!

Two top players suffered a "brutal attack"
Teacher Shan, representative of the "forces of mischief"
Student Zheng, an "accomplice of mischief"
Student Qi Huang, "trapped in difficulty"
Brother Long, "entering the water bucket for the second time"

During the spare time outside the lectures, each group was also making final efforts and working overtime for their group presentations. Neither the scorching weather nor the physical and mental fatigue accumulated over ten consecutive days could stop the students' determination to prepare their reports. Everything is ready and everyone is set to go. How will it turn out? Stay tuned for tomorrow's reveal.
