CEADs Summer Camp for the China Carbon Accounting Database: Day 5 and 6, Steady Progress and Red Study Trip

Day 5 2022-07-26

Academician Wang Shouyang

Wang Shouyang is a specially appointed researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a distinguished professor under the Ministry of Education Yangtze River Scholars Program, a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, and a fellow of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences. He is now a researcher at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and director of the Center for Forecasting Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also serves as dean of the School of Economics and Management, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice president of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences, and editor-in-chief, deputy editor-in-chief, or editorial board member of 16 international academic journals including Energy Economics. His main research areas include decision analysis, financial management, logistics and supply chain management, economic analysis and forecasting, and policy analysis.

Part 1 Public Lecture, Session 7

In the hot month of July, on the fifth day of the summer camp, the seventh session of the Public Lecture Forum invited the much-anticipated academic heavyweight, Academician Wang Shouyang. Before the lecture began at 9:00 a.m., the venue was already packed with CEADs summer camp participants, all eagerly waiting. Teacher Guan's formal introduction further heightened the atmosphere. Academician Wang gave a lecture titled "Several Issues in Environmental Economics and Recent Research Progress" and shared his experience and techniques on how to publish high-quality papers.

As an older generation scientist, Academician Wang was humorous, lively, uniquely insightful, and full of memorable remarks, drawing constant praise from the audience. Starting from carbon emissions, he first introduced hot topics such as Bitcoin mining and China carbon emissions and economic security, and then discussed regional trade agreements and carbon emissions, 1.5 degree warming and China economic development, solar photovoltaic power generation and rural poverty, ocean shipping and carbon emissions in the high seas, and China 2060 carbon neutrality technology roadmap.

At the end of the lecture, Academician Wang interacted warmly with the campers and answered their questions. He suggested that graduate students should combine national affairs and policy trends during their studies, choose appropriate hot topics as research themes, and make their papers more valuable. Specifically, they should build paper ideas around international hotspots and use scientific methods to construct models and scenario simulations. He also stressed the importance of studying carbon accounting and the intersection of industrial greening and digitalization.

Active Questions and Exchanges

Part 2 Group Activities

After the lecture, Teacher Guan announced the final selection plan and scholarship arrangements. He had high expectations for this year campers and affirmed their efforts, while also encouraging everyone to think boldly and propose different innovative ideas. He hoped that during the summer camp, the participants would make full use of their strengths, integrate multiple disciplines, explore the energy consumption, carbon emissions, and socioeconomic characteristics of different regions, and complete the final poster presentation, working steadily toward the selection of certificates, outstanding groups, and outstanding individuals. He also hoped that the research results from the summer camp would eventually appear in the form of academic papers or reports, providing more scholars, experts, and organizations with professional carbon neutrality pathway analysis. After hearing Teacher Guan words, the campers cheered and began brainstorming with full enthusiasm and anticipation.

After the midday break, each group gathered early to continue intensive discussion and learning. Fuyuan Hall became a place where ideas collided. Everyone discussed task assignments and implementation plans for the next stage. Each person combined their own major and background to offer different perspectives. The mentors also shared many materials and software tools, actively providing solutions and guidance to the group members. Throughout the afternoon, bursts of laughter and cheerful conversation could be heard in Fuyuan Hall, and the campers built deep friendships while learning and growing together.

Live up to our youth and seize every moment. The young campers, in the prime of their youth, moved steadily and far on the journey of contributing to the carbon neutrality cause of the motherland.

Day 6 2022-07-27

Red Study Trip, Remembering the Heroes

The 4th China Carbon Accounting Database Summer Camp not only included a full schedule of lecture-based learning and data mining work, but also encouraged campers to experience Xiamen local characteristics and customs during their breaks. Therefore, on July 27, CEADs organized a red study trip from the Heroic Three Islands Battlefield Tourist Park to the Jupengfei Dream Coast Resort.

Heroic Three Islands

On the morning of the 27th, everyone traveled by bus to the Heroic Three Islands Battlefield Tourist Park. The park is located at the southeastern end of Dadeng Island, is a national AAA scenic spot, and covers an area of about 80,000 square meters. The park includes a rich set of themed exhibition halls and attractions, such as the Heroic Three Islands Spirit Theme Hall, the World Record Military Loudspeaker, the Heroic Sculpture Memorial Plaza, the Three Islands Militia Achievement Hall, the former artillery position, the military weapons display area, and the Frontline Broadcast Tower.

Experiencing the Spirit

During the visit, the guide gave us a detailed introduction to the historical development of the Heroic Three Islands, leading us to a deeper understanding of the heroic stories behind them and the spirit of the Heroic Three Islands. We deeply felt the indomitable spirit of the entire island population and military forces standing together against foreign aggression during the Kinmen Artillery Battle. Soldiers and civilians on the islands fought side by side, giving rise to nationally known heroic groups such as the Double Shanghai Women Artillery Unit and the Eight Heroic Sisters. In years of long and arduous struggle, the people of the Heroic Three Islands wrote a heroic epic that was moving, tragic, and resounding across the country.

Smoke and fire have long vanished, and time has flown. Today, when we set foot on this heroic island, the bunkers and hidden fortifications all around once again bring back the distant artillery fire and the moving, tragic heroic deeds that unfolded there. An old photograph is history frozen in place; an old object is an undying witness.

The battlefield of the past has now become a hub of cross-strait exchange. The great changes of an age, from war to peace, have made the Heroic Three Islands spirit more precious, richer, weightier, and more enduring. We hope that generations of young people will continue to revisit the glorious history of the Heroic Three Islands and keep its spirit alive from generation to generation.

Summer by the Sea

Sunshine and Beach

In the afternoon, the campers went to the Jupengfei Dream Coast Resort to feel the crashing waves and gentle sea breeze, easing the pace of their daily research work and keeping themselves in better condition for future challenges. Under the sunset, everyone rolled up their trouser legs, stepped onto the fine sand, and ran into the summer sea breeze and the summer tide.

Buffet Restaurant

As night fell, everyone returned to the seaside buffet restaurant for dinner. The friends worked together beside the grill, each taking on a task to barbecue the food. Fine food and drinks were close at hand, endless scenery stretched out in the distance, and the seaside barbecue hid a romantic sunset glow. We believe the campers gained plenty of opportunities for mutual learning and exchange through this team-building and study trip, deepening their friendships.

Seaside Concert~

Sometimes listen to the wind and the waves, and then come back to keep forging ahead. We hope that in the remaining days of the summer camp, we can continue to stay passionate and devote ourselves to more difficult data collection and deeper result analysis, turning the fruits of learning and education into motivation for working with determination and innovation, and contributing youthful energy to the construction of China and the global carbon accounting database with practical actions.
