CEADs China Carbon Accounting Database Summer Camp: Student Scholarships Established for the First Time
Background
In September 2020, President Xi Jinping announced that China would scale up its nationally determined contributions, aim to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030, and strive to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality is a solemn commitment China has made to the world and an important step in the global response to climate change.
For many years, the China Carbon Accounting Database - CEADs (ceads.net) team has worked with support from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, UK Research and Innovation, and other institutions and research organizations. The team brings together scholars from research institutions in China, Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, and beyond to jointly compile multi-scale carbon emission inventories for China and other emerging economies, and to analyze global and regional carbon emission patterns. The database has already supported more than 800 journal papers worldwide, provided a solid scientific basis for green and low-carbon development across regions, and contributed to policy design and implementation for controlling greenhouse gas emissions in emerging economies.
Recently, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security announced new green occupations emerging under the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and the Ministry of Education issued a notice on strengthening the higher-education training system for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. The China Carbon Accounting Database team (CEADs) will hold a carbon accounting summer camp at Xiamen University in July 2022. Experts and scholars will build a training curriculum, provide guidance on theories of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality as well as carbon accounting theory and practice, and cultivate interdisciplinary professionals with strong expertise and practical capacity for the 3060 goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. The event aims to implement the strategic guidance of the dual-carbon goals, train carbon-reduction professionals with an international perspective, and develop a reserve of young talent for China's dual-carbon work.

Event Details
1
With guidance and support from the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21 under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the CPC Xiang'an District Committee of Xiamen, and the Basic Science Center for Econometric Modeling and Economic Policy Studies of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the summer camp will be hosted by the China Carbon Accounting Database - CEADs team of Tsinghua University's Institute for Carbon Neutrality. It will be organized by the Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans (Xiamen University), with co-organizers including the Institute for Global Change Studies at Tsinghua University, University College London, and the University of Birmingham. Under the theme "Carbon Accounting and Carbon-Neutral Transition Pathways for China and Emerging Economies," the camp will set sail again in Xiamen.
2
Through coursework, group projects, and teamwork, the summer camp will provide outstanding young scholars with systematic training in carbon accounting methodologies, practical carbon accounting guidelines, and case-based teaching, thereby building an academic platform for exchange, collaboration, and joint development in carbon accounting. The camp will invite well-known experts and scholars from China and abroad to deliver keynote talks. Participants will also work in groups to study dual-carbon transitions in different countries and cities, exploring the socioeconomic impacts of climate change and green, zero-carbon development pathways across countries and regions.
3
The summer camp aims to provide a strong exchange platform for young students in the dual-carbon field. More than 300 applications have been received from over 110 universities and colleges. The summer camp has selected participants on merit after fully considering applicants' institutions, academic backgrounds, abilities, and overall qualities. Where professional alignment is suitable, the camp generally supports at least one representative from each institution to ensure diversity, professional relevance, and interdisciplinarity among participants. The organizing team has completed the selection process and sent 117 admission invitations. Please check your email and complete and submit the required information within the stated time so that the camp can be organized smoothly. For questions, please contact the summer camp organizing team at ceads2022@163.com.

CEADs Scholarships
This year, the China Carbon Accounting Database team has established summer camp scholarships for the first time, with support from the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21 under the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Basic Science Center for Econometric Modeling and Economic Policy Studies of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The scholarships will recognize participants with outstanding performance during the camp. This summer camp will offer two group scholarships for research teams and one individual scholarship. The camp will reimburse travel and accommodation expenses for winning teams or individuals.
In addition, all participants who meet the requirements during the camp will receive a certificate of completion.
