First Sino-French Carbon Neutrality Summer School and 2024 CEADs Summer Camp Day 8 & 9: A Youth Storm for a Shared Carbon Future

Day 8

HELLO CEADs

The group work is progressing in an orderly way

Before we knew it, this summer school had already reached day eight.

Over this period, the group members had already become familiar with one another.

The work was also progressing with greater coordination and ease.

Today we invited students from the Young Scholars Group

to share what they have gained from this summer camp.

Interview with the Young Scholars Group

The outstanding students in the Young Scholars Group, as the backbone of the future, are truly a "youth storm." Let us see what they gained from this summer camp.

Q1

“What are your impressions of this summer camp?”

“Because my previous studies had focused mainly on physics, this was my first time being exposed to disciplines such as environmental science and geographic science, and everything felt challenging. After these days of learning, I have gained a lot. For example, we encountered a new drawing software, CDR, and I felt its functions were very powerful. In practical use, it revealed many interesting applications. Before joining this summer camp, I had never known that maps could be drawn with hundreds of different projections, and that the resulting images could serve different purposes. I found that quite amazing.

Our Young Scholars Group is now working on an analysis of oil and gas power generation capacity characteristics. At first, none of us had a clear idea of what to analyze. But under the guidance of our mentors, we carefully examined the data and found many worthwhile topics for discussion. For example, power generation technologies differ from place to place, so we need to combine those differences with geographic features to discuss why that is the case. Overall, I very much enjoy this learning and analysis process.”

Q2

“As a young scholar, do you feel anything different?”

“Being able to study with very outstanding classmates, senior students, and teachers gives me a great sense of improvement. The biggest gain has been learning the mindset one should have when facing a research project and finding my own way of thinking.”

(Interviewee: Wang Siyi)

Q3

“What is the biggest gain from participating in the summer camp?”

“The biggest gain is the skill of using computer programs and data processing. After all, I had almost no experience with research projects before. When we encountered difficulties, we would discuss them within the group, and if they still could not be solved, we would ask the teachers in charge for help. Our communication and interpersonal skills also improved in the process. I gained a lot of exercise and benefited tremendously from this summer camp.”

Q4

“What interesting things did you encounter during the summer camp?”

“I learned many new things. Harbin is a very fun city, and my teammates, senior students, and teachers are all very outstanding and serve as our role models. In this summer camp, each of us shared our own views on the research topic, and everyone learned from one another through the exchange. I also learned how to use some software I had never touched before, so overall I gained a great deal.”

Day 9 Expert Lectures

The first lecture for the students was delivered by Ding Hui, Party Secretary of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. With the topic “The Progress of Global Climate Governance and Domestic Policies for Responding to Climate Change,” he delivered a精彩 presentation to the students.

Using the Paris Agreement as a starting point, Secretary Ding introduced the phased progress of global climate governance and showed the collective efforts made worldwide in this area. He also provided a comprehensive analysis of China's governance policies and its proactive response.

The next excellent lecture was delivered by Yu Xiang, researcher at the Institute of Ecological Civilization, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. With the topic “Industrial Carbon Reduction and China's Green Production System,” she presented China's policies and efforts in environmental governance and carbon reduction from a more specific perspective.

Through her explanation of China's industrial green production system and the turning point reached by the country's new energy vehicle industry, she used highly professional analysis and narration to help the students understand the importance and progress of green production in industry.

As this summer camp gradually enters its final countdown, each group has gone from unfamiliar at the beginning to familiar now. We believe that in the remaining time, every team will make the most of its refined teamwork to prepare fully for the final presentation!
